TRANS-NIH INITIATIVE

Neuromice.org was created as a part of a Trans-NIH Initiative to generate tools and resources for mouse genetics, genomics, and their application to other areas of biology (http://www.nih.gov/science/models/mouse/). One new effort undertaken as part of this initiative is to provide new genetic model systems for study. Seven NIH Institutes that support neuroscience research [National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Eye Institute (NEI), National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)] established programs to systematically mutagenize and phenotypically screen mice in order to identify mutations, and thus genes with neuroscience-relevant functions. These mice are resources for scientists interested in gene discovery as well as for those wishing to understand genetic or molecular mechanisms underlying specific biological processes.
