Males exhibit increased preference for ethanol and increased ethanol consumption.

This recessive mutation (tmgc49), linked to Chr 15, was detected in the progeny of C57BL/6JRn males given one dose of 150 mg/kg ENU. 158TNR exhibits increased ethanol consumption in a standard two-bottle ethanol choice test. The amount of each solution (10% v/v ethanol or water) that is consumed is measured and recorded each day for the 4-day trial. When both sexes are combined, all measures related to this test are outliers. The mice 1) drink increased amounts of ethanol, 2) drink low amounts of water 3) drink high amounts of ethanol for their size which is determined by calculating an average grams of ethanol consumed per kilogram of mouse per day or g/kg/day (See BOTTLE_ETHA_DAY) and prefer the ethanol over the water solution as measured in the preference ratio that is calculated by diving the amount of ethanol consumed by the amount of liquid consumed (see BOTTLE_PREF_RAT). The effects are more pronounced and less variable in males compared to females. In particular, the g/kg/day (See BOTTLE_ETHA_DAY for males) and the preference ratio (see BOTTLE_PREF_RAT for males) for the males demonstrate this difference. Genetic control of gender-specific ethanol consumption has been shown in several studies through the use of QTL analyses.
